ARTIST'S SUMMARY

Having gone to the Wat Phra Singh temple in  Chiangmai, Thailand a number of times to paint, I did so on most days without ever being disturbed, or even seeing anyone. On this particular day however, a monk dressed in the customary orange cowl stopped and asked if he could see what I was painting.

As I showed it to him I could see that he was a little puzzled, no doubt because he was expecting to see something much more representational, much less abstract. I explained to him that I was mixing all the elements I saw to make a soup. Not one to be eaten with the mouth, but with the eye.”

“Ah yes, I see!”, he exclaimed. “You are painting a good soup. A good Tom Yum soup!”

We both exploded with laughter.
